What to Expect From Your Blonde Colour Consultation

Beautiful blonde hair starts with a personalised consultation.

Whether you’re dreaming of a bright, creamy blonde, something soft and lived-in, or a complete transformation from brunette to blonde, we’ll take the time to understand your vision, your hair and your lifestyle before recommending the best approach.

Our experienced colourists will assess your natural colour, hair condition and previous colouring history, taking into account everything from your skin tone to how much maintenance you’re comfortable with.

We’ll explain which techniques and tones will work best for your hair, what’s realistically achievable and how to maintain your result between appointments.

If your desired blonde requires several appointments, we’ll create a carefully considered colour plan that prioritises your hair’s condition. You’ll also receive an upfront quote, so you know exactly what to expect before we begin.

Please note: All services are available to clients aged 16 and over only.

What Is Blonde Colouring?

Creating beautiful blonde hair requires far more than simply lightening your natural colour. From achieving the perfect tone to creating dimension and seamless transitions, professional blonde colouring involves an understanding of colour science, precise application and how different techniques work with individual hair types.

At The Cutting Room, our colourists create everything from luminous platinum and creamy blondes to soft beige, honey, dimensional and lived-in blondes. Depending on your desired result, we may use traditional foils, babylights, balayage, root blending or a combination of techniques to achieve the right balance of brightness, depth and dimension.

Perhaps you’re already blonde but feel your colour has become dull, brassy or uneven. Maybe you’re considering a significant colour transformation, or you’ve struggled to find a colourist who can achieve the particular shade you’re looking for.

Whatever your starting point, we’ll work with you to create a blonde that’s beautifully suited to your features, complements your personal style and feels just as good as it looks.

Find Your Perfect Blonde

From bright, statement blondes to soft, natural-looking colour, there’s a beautiful blonde for every style and personality.

The secret is finding the right combination of tone, brightness and dimension to complement your features, natural hair colour and lifestyle.

At The Cutting Room, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

Our experienced colourists will help you explore the possibilities and create a personalised blonde that looks beautiful and works with the amount of maintenance you’re comfortable with.

Not sure which blonde is right for you? Bring along a few inspiration photographs to your consultation. We’ll help you choose a shade and colouring technique that suits your hair, features and maintenance preferences.

Bright & Creamy Blonde

For those who love a striking, luminous blonde. Bright blondes create a bold, polished finish but generally require more intensive lightening and regular maintenance. We’ll assess your hair’s condition and explain what’s achievable before recommending the best approach.

Cool & Beige Blonde

Soft, sophisticated and beautifully balanced, cool and beige blondes combine subtle warmth and coolness for a flattering, natural-looking finish. They’re ideal for clients who want a refined blonde without an overly golden or icy appearance.

Honey & Golden Blonde

Warm, radiant and full of dimension, honey and golden blondes bring beautiful richness and brightness to the hair. These shades can work particularly well for clients who prefer a softer, sun-kissed look rather than a very cool blonde.

Lived-In & Dimensional Blonde

Perfect for clients who love beautiful blonde hair but prefer softer regrowth and less frequent major colour appointments. By combining lighter and deeper tones with carefully placed highlights and root blending, we can create a natural-looking blonde with depth, movement and a beautifully blended finish.

Blonde Colouring Techniques Compared

There are several ways to achieve beautiful blonde hair, and each technique creates a slightly different result. The right choice depends on your natural colour, how bright you’d like to go and how much maintenance you’re comfortable with.

Technique What It Achieves Best For Maintenance
Traditional Foils Controlled lightening that creates brightness and highlights throughout selected sections of hair. Clients wanting a brighter blonde, noticeable highlights or lighter colour closer to the roots. Generally requires more frequent regrowth appointments.
Balayage Soft, hand-painted highlights that create natural-looking dimension and blended colour. Clients wanting sun-kissed blonde, softer regrowth and a more relaxed finish. Often allows longer intervals between major colour appointments.
Babylights Very fine highlights that create delicate, evenly distributed brightness. Clients wanting subtle dimension, a refined blonde or a naturally lighter appearance. Depends on placement, contrast and how close highlights are applied to the roots.
Foilyage Combines balayage-style placement with foil processing to achieve greater lift and brightness. Clients wanting a brighter blonde with a soft, dimensional finish. Varies depending on the amount of lightening and root blending.
Root Blending Softens the transition between natural regrowth and lighter hair for a seamless finish. Clients wanting a lived-in blonde or less noticeable regrowth. Can extend the time between major lightening appointments.

Not sure which technique is right for you? Our experienced colourists will assess your hair, discuss your desired result and recommend the most suitable approach. Sometimes combining techniques creates the most beautiful, personalised blonde.

Testimonials

I have finally found my hair tribe!!! I reached out to local fb page for hairdresser recommendations – with one comment saying “hairdressers aren’t magicians!”, I would normally agree until visiting The Cutting Room today.

After years of lacklustre salon visits from around the globe and top city salons, paying $$$$ – I finally decided to try something new – a local! From the moment I walked into The Cutting Room and sat in Cass’ chair, I knew I finally found my unicorn.

Cass isn’t just a seasoned hairdresser – she’s a true artist who pours passion and creativity into every cut and colour. For the first time in years, I absolutely LOVE my hair. Her humility and warmth make the whole experience even better; she’s genuinely one of the most lovable stylists I’ve ever met.

If you’re hesitant about change (like I was), trust me – this is the place that will restore your faith in great hair. My hair turned out better than my desired pic!! Plus, the convenience of parking right out front is the cherry on top.

Cass, you are truly underrated and deserve every bit of praise. I cannot praise and love you enough – it’s so cringe.

I had my first colouring appointment with Alice yesterday, and oh my goodness the woman is brilliant at what she does.

She was so thorough with the consultation, she took the time to listen to what I wanted to achieve, and she offered great advice and ideas (without pushing an agenda).

And the final result, I couldn’t be happier with it.

The place has such a good vibe, just a bunch of wonderful women doing great work and treating everyone that walks in like a friend. Everyone is so lovely. Cannot recommend highly enough.

FAQs

The right shade of blonde depends on your natural hair colour, skin tone, eye colour and personal style. Some people look beautiful with warm honey or golden blondes, while others prefer cooler ash, beige or creamy tones. During your consultation, we’ll consider your features, existing colour and the look you’re hoping to achieve. We’ll also discuss maintenance, because choosing the right blonde is about finding a shade that suits both you and your lifestyle.

Absolutely, although the process will depend on your starting colour, previous colouring history and hair condition. Going from dark brown to blonde can sometimes be achieved in one appointment, but significant transformations often require several sessions to achieve the desired result while minimising damage. We’ll assess your hair, explain what’s realistically achievable and create a personalised colour plan. We would always rather take a gradual approach than compromise the condition of your hair.

Foils are ideal for creating controlled brightness and highlights throughout the hair, particularly if you want a lighter, more consistent blonde from closer to the roots. Balayage creates softer, more blended colour with natural-looking dimension and generally less noticeable regrowth. Neither technique is automatically better than the other. The right choice depends on your desired blonde, natural base colour and maintenance preferences. Sometimes we’ll combine techniques to achieve the best result.

Lightening hair involves changing its natural pigment and structure, so some degree of stress to the hair is unavoidable. However, professional application, appropriate products and careful processing can help minimise unnecessary damage. We’ll assess your hair’s condition before recommending a lightening service and may suggest a staged transformation if your hair is already fragile or heavily processed. Our priority is achieving beautiful blonde results while maintaining the best possible hair condition.

That depends on your chosen technique, natural regrowth and how you like your blonde to look. Bright blonde foils applied close to the roots may require appointments every 6–8 weeks, while softer lived-in blondes can often go 10–14 weeks or longer between major colour appointments. Toners or gloss treatments may be recommended between visits to maintain your preferred shade. We’ll help you choose a maintenance schedule that suits your hair, lifestyle and budget.

In many cases, yes. Unwanted yellow or orange tones can develop because of underlying pigment, previous colouring, environmental exposure or changes to your toner over time. Depending on the cause, we may recommend a professional toner, additional lightening or a more involved colour correction service. We’ll assess your hair before deciding on the best approach. Purple shampoo can help with certain yellow tones, but it won’t correct every blonde colour problem.

Platinum blonde is a very light, typically cool-toned blonde that often requires substantial lightening and regular maintenance. Creamy blonde has a softer, more balanced tone that can incorporate subtle warmth for a natural-looking finish. Lived-in blonde describes a colouring approach rather than one particular shade, using blended roots and carefully placed lighter sections to create softer regrowth. You can achieve lived-in blonde in a range of tones, from beige and honey to brighter, cooler blondes.

The cost depends on your current hair colour, length, thickness, condition and the techniques needed to achieve your desired result. Refreshing an existing blonde generally involves less work than a major transformation from dark brown to blonde. Some appointments may also require toning, treatments or additional colouring stages. We provide an upfront quote during your consultation, so you’ll understand what’s included before proceeding. You can also view our current packages and pricing on the website.

You don’t generally need to wash your hair immediately before your appointment unless your stylist has recommended it. Hair that’s reasonably clean and free from heavy product build-up is usually suitable for colouring. Avoid arriving with excessive dry shampoo, oils or styling products, as these can make assessment and application more difficult. If you’re having a scalp-lightening service, we’ll advise you on any specific preparation needed. If you’re unsure, simply ask when booking.

Inspiration photographs are always helpful, particularly if they show the tone, brightness and overall look you’re hoping to achieve. It’s also useful to tell us about previous colour treatments, including box dyes, toners, chemical straightening and any colour corrections. Be open about your maintenance preferences and budget, too. The more we understand about your hair history and expectations, the better we can recommend a realistic approach to achieving your ideal blonde.

02

Preparation & Hair Protection

Before colouring, we’ll prepare your hair using professional products and techniques suited to its condition. Whether you’re refreshing your existing blonde or planning a major transformation, we’ll take a carefully considered approach to lightening that helps minimise unnecessary damage.

03

Expert Blonde Colour Application

Your colourist will apply the chosen technique with precision, whether that’s traditional foils, babylights, balayage or a combination of methods. Every detail, from the placement of lighter sections to the balance of brightness and dimension, is tailored to achieve your desired result.

04

Toning & Colour Refinement

Once your hair has reached the appropriate level of lightness, we’ll refine the colour with a professional toner or gloss where needed. This allows us to create your preferred blonde, whether it’s cool and creamy, soft beige, golden or beautifully neutral, while ensuring a balanced, polished finish.

05

Conditioning & Styling

We’ll finish with a suitable conditioning treatment to help maintain softness and manageability, followed by professional styling to showcase your new colour. This is where the carefully placed tones, brightness and dimension come together.

06

Personalised Aftercare & Maintenance

Before you leave, we’ll explain how to care for your blonde between appointments, recommend suitable products and discuss when to return for toning, regrowth or colour refreshes. You’ll leave with a personalised maintenance plan designed to keep your blonde looking beautiful for as long as possible.

Real Blonde Transformation

Blonde Hair Maintenance & Aftercare

Beautiful blonde hair deserves the right care between salon appointments. Whether you have bright platinum highlights, creamy blonde foils or a softer lived-in colour, a good maintenance routine will help preserve your tone, maintain shine and keep your hair looking and feeling its best.

Lightened hair can be more prone to dryness, breakage and unwanted warmth, so we’ll recommend an aftercare routine suited to your colour, hair condition and lifestyle.

Follow Your Personalised Maintenance Plan

Every blonde is different. Depending on your chosen technique and natural regrowth, you may need regular foil appointments, occasional toner or gloss refreshes, or less frequent visits to maintain a lived-in blonde. We’ll help you plan your appointments so your colour continues to look beautiful without unnecessary processing.

Choose the Right Shampoo & Conditioner

Use good-quality products formulated for colour-treated hair, taking your hair’s condition into account. Gentle cleansing and regular conditioning can help maintain softness, manageability and shine. Your stylist can recommend products suited to your particular blonde and hair type.

Don’t Overuse Purple Shampoo

Purple shampoo can help neutralise unwanted yellow tones, while blue-toning products are generally used to counteract orange tones. However, these products won’t correct every colour problem, and excessive use can leave some blondes looking dull or uneven. Ask your colourist which product to use and how frequently.

Keep Your Blonde Hydrated

Lightening can make hair more porous and vulnerable to moisture loss. Regular conditioning treatments, suitable leave-in products and gentle detangling can help improve manageability and reduce breakage. Hair that’s well cared for will generally look smoother and reflect light more evenly.

Protect Your Hair From Heat

Frequent blow-drying, straightening and curling at high temperatures can weaken lightened hair and contribute to dryness and breakage. Always use a suitable heat protectant, avoid unnecessarily high temperatures and give your hair a break from heated styling when possible.

Take Care Around Sun, Chlorine & Salt Water

Sun exposure, swimming pool chemicals and mineral deposits can affect blonde hair’s appearance and condition.

Protect your hair from prolonged sun exposure, wet it with fresh water before swimming and rinse thoroughly afterwards. A suitable leave-in conditioner can also help reduce tangling and dryness.

Refresh Your Blonde When Needed

Over time, toners can fade and your blonde may begin to look warmer or less vibrant. A professional toner or gloss appointment may be enough to refresh your shade without additional lightening.

If you’re noticing significant brassiness or uneven colour, speak with your stylist before attempting to correct it at home.

Keep Your Ends in Good Condition

Regular trims help remove split or damaged ends and keep your blonde looking polished. Combined with gentle styling and appropriate conditioning, maintaining your ends can make a noticeable difference to the overall appearance of your colour.

With the right home care and a personalised salon maintenance plan, your blonde can continue looking beautiful long after your appointment. For more advice, read our Blonde Hair Maintenance: How Often Should You Touch Up? guide.
