What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a hand-painted colouring technique that creates soft, natural-looking dimension and beautifully blended colour. Unlike traditional foils or all-over colour, balayage involves hand-painting highlights onto the hair to create soft, sun-kissed dimension and a seamless, natural-looking blend that grows out beautifully.

One of the best things about balayage is its low maintenance! Most clients can go 3–6 months before needing a refresh.  A gloss toner may be necessary after 6-8 weeks.

Balayage is loved for its soft, low-maintenance grow-out, but the right aftercare will help keep your colour looking its best for longer. We may recommend a toner or gloss between colour appointments to refresh your shade, along with professional home care products to maintain shine, moisture and tone. During your consultation, we’ll create a maintenance plan that’s tailored to your hair, lifestyle and the result you want to achieve.

Your balayage is designed to grow out beautifully, but the right aftercare will help keep your colour looking fresh, healthy and vibrant between appointments.

  • Follow Your Personalised Hair Care Plan – During your appointment, we’ll recommend the right maintenance plan, products and timing for your individual hair. These recommendations aren’t about selling extra products – they’re about protecting your colour, maintaining the health of your hair and helping you get the most from your balayage between visits.
  • Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo & Conditioner – Harsh sulfates can strip colour and moisture. We recommend using salon-quality, sulfate-free products to keep your balayage soft and glossy.
  • Keep Hair Hydrated – Regular conditioning treatments help restore moisture, improve shine and keep lightened hair feeling soft and healthy.
  • Protect Against Heat Damage – Always use a heat protectant before blow-drying or styling with hot tools to help prevent colour fade and maintain your hair’s condition.
  • Protect Your Hair from the Elements – UV exposure, salt water and chlorine can affect your colour. Protective products and rinsing your hair after swimming can help preserve your balayage.
  • Refresh Your Colour When Needed – A gloss or toner appointment every 6–8 weeks can refresh your tone, add shine and keep your balayage looking its best between full colour services.
  • Maintain Healthy Ends – Regular trims help keep your hair looking fresh while preventing split ends from affecting the overall finish of your balayage.

Booking Fee

When you book your appointment with us, we kindly ask for a $50 booking fee, which is securely stored on your client file. This helps us reserve your appointment and ensures we can provide every client with the personalised care and attention they deserve.

On the day of your appointment, you can choose to:

Apply the booking fee towards your next visit, or
Deduct it from the total cost of your service.

Cancellation Policy

We completely understand that sometimes plans change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, we kindly ask that you provide at least 48 hours’ notice.

If you need to contact us outside our opening hours, please email hello@thecuttingroom.net.au. Your 48 hours’ notice will commence from the time your email is sent.

Please note that your booking fee is non-refundable if the required notice isn’t provided. If you need to reschedule within the required notice period, simply give the salon a call during business hours or send us an email outside business hours, and we’ll be happy to help.  All refunds are provided in accordance with Australian Consumer Law.
