What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a hand-painted colouring technique that creates soft, natural-looking dimension and beautifully blended colour. Unlike traditional foils or all-over colour, balayage is customised to suit your individual hair, creating a result that grows out seamlessly with no harsh regrowth lines.

Whether you’re looking for a subtle sun-kissed glow, a lived-in blonde, soft caramel tones or rich brunette dimension, every balayage is tailored to complement your features, lifestyle and maintenance preferences.

At The Cutting Room, every balayage begins with a personalised consultation. We’ll assess your hair, discuss your goals and explain what’s realistically achievable before creating a colour plan designed specifically for you. Our priority is always to achieve beautiful results while protecting the long-term health of your hair.

Please note: All services are available to clients aged 16 and over only.

FAQs

It depends on your starting colour and desired result, but expect around 3 – 4.5 hours, including processing time.

Absolutely! Our stylists customise balayage for every hair colour, from deep brunettes to light blondes.

We prioritise hair health, using premium products and techniques to minimise damage. Plus, we offer nourishing treatments to keep your strands strong and vibrant.

One of the best things about balayage is its low maintenance! Most clients can go 3–6 months before needing a refresh.  A gloss toner may be necessary after 6 – 12 weeks.

Balayage is loved for its soft, low-maintenance grow-out, but the right aftercare will help keep your colour looking its best for longer. We may recommend a toner or gloss between colour appointments to refresh your shade, along with professional home care products to maintain shine, moisture and tone. During your consultation, we’ll create a maintenance plan that’s tailored to your hair, lifestyle and the result you want to achieve.

Maintenance & Aftercare

To keep your balayage looking fresh and vibrant, proper aftercare is essential. Here’s how to maintain your colour between salon visits:

  • Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo & Conditioner – Harsh sulfates can strip colour and moisture. We recommend using salon-quality, sulfate-free products to keep your balayage soft and glossy.
  • Hydration is Key – A weekly deep-conditioning treatment will help keep your strands nourished and prevent dryness.
  • Minimise Heat Styling – Excessive heat can cause colour fading and damage. Always use a heat protectant if styling with hot tools.
  • Protect Your Colour from the Sun & Water – UV rays and chlorine can alter your colour. Use a UV-protectant spray and rinse hair with fresh water before swimming.
  • Schedule a Gloss or Toner Refresh – Every 6-8 weeks, a toner can neutralise unwanted tones and enhance your balayage, keeping it looking fresh.
  • Regular Trims for Healthy Ends – Balayage looks best on healthy, well-maintained hair. Keep your ends in top condition with regular trims.

With the right care, your balayage will remain luminous and effortless for months, allowing you to enjoy beautifully blended colour without constant touch-ups.
