Thinking of heading pastel or silver? Here's what it will cost you.

9/1/2016

We get between 10 and 15 people a week asking for quotes to go grey/silver or pastel colours like lavender.
We do a lot of this kind of thing and have a great reputation doing it well.

I do however spend a lot of time answering questions, quoting and replying to messages so I just thought a post like this may help you if you are thinking about having this service done.

Firstly, going these types of colours is not cheap and despite what you may think, the length of your hair has little to no impact on the price. It's the time that it takes.

* Also please note, these types of colours can not be done on hair that is in poor condition.
Picture
The first step is to get you as close to white as possible.
We use #olaplex and #cureplex so the condition of your hair is nurtured but this process is the longest part.

Depending on how dark your hair is, how much colour build up you have and how good or bad the condition of your hair is, you may need to do this part in up to 3 visits.

This process (including Olaplex)
is around $200 per application and can take 1 - 2 hours per application.
Remember you may need 3 of these.

Once your hair is as pale as possible, we rinse then dry off the hair. Then we need to tone/gloss you to eliminate any yellow in the hair.

This step of the process can cost between $40 and $110 depending on the amount of colour required and the amount of processing time.
Once this step is complete, we need to rinse and totally dry off your hair.
Picture
The next step is adding the pastel purple/silver/grey.
We have around 5 different brands to achieve these colours and the correct one for you will be selected during your visit.

This step will take about an hour including mixing, application and processing and will cost between $42 and $100 depending on the colour brand and how much we need.

Then we need to apply the step 2 of your Olaplex/Cureplex treatment which can take another 30 minutes.
Picture
Add a cut and a blowdry (we do not do these types of services WITHOUT a cut and blowdry as we need to thoroughly check the condition and the colour results), and that's another 45 minutes.

So there you have it!
In total, you will be looking at around 4 - 8 hours work, rounding off at about $125 per hour including Olaplex take home hair rebuilder, which includes 6 - 12 treatments.
Picture
Also, the maintenance needs to be discussed. Just because you've now had this done, does not mean it stays looking like this!
And to keep it looking amazing, you have to keep on top of it.

These pastels/silvers fade and fast.
I shampoo everyday (I wear a lot of product in my hair and I'm very oily) with professional products and do all the right treatments etc and I need my pastel purple or silver topped up every 3 weeks.
This will cost between $42 and $100 depending on how much product is used.
Picture
Then, if you have had an on scalp bleach, you will need your regrowth done.
So we'll need to relighted it, $60 - $80, tone/gloss it to remove yellow, $42 - $60, then add the purple/silver $42 - $100.
Add a trim and a blow dry and you are looking at between $200 and $300.

We do between 2 and 5 of these per week and the results are SPECTACULAR!

I guess I just really wanted to explain the steps, the pricing and most importantly, the maintenance.

I have been wearing these colours myself for nearly 18 months and have been completing services like this in a professional salon environment for 23 years.

I am a colour technician as is Lee.
We UNDERSTAND hair and we KNOW colour.

We wanted you to understand the level of work and commitment that goes into these colours. It is not a one step process and it is not cheap.

However, some people can spend $400 - $800 on a weekend away or even a night out!

So spending this type of money on a service that will make you feel fashionable, sexy and the envy of your friends for weeks, has far more value, than spending that kind of money on a night out or a weekend away.
You get much more bang for your buck. 😉

Cassandra

All you do is apply the semi permanent pastel or silver.
It's easy.

Actually Grey hair still needs a mild bleach or it won't hold any pastel shades...As little as 5 volume mixed with bleach will rough up the cuticle and allow the colour to take hold.

It's still a similar process but doesn't take quite as long. "Gray" hair naturally is the absence of color, white hair, so you don't need several lightening processes unless you don't mind having your natural color still present. You will still need a color application to soften the resistance of the gray so it can absorb and hold the fashion shade you want, albeit gray, lavender, etc.

I've been using matrix color graphic purple and clear on my gray, one step. No pre softening or lightening. It's amazing

Appreciate breakdown. Is the dollar sign a mistake for the £? Or do I calculate the £ equivalent, or do you have the scottish prices to replace this notice?
Sounds fickle but as a customer it was distracting from your relevant and well written message.
Great looks
xx

Hi.
It was written with the dollar sign as we are in Australia and we use dollars here.
I'm sorry if it was distracting but I can't calculate a conversation for every currency in the world.

My apologies, I, mistakenly looked at who put it online locally - so of course you can't cater for every currency. Sorry again. This is a great contribution you have made, well done indeed.

I used to do those colours in the late 50's using straight ammonia mixed with peroxide and then rinsed with food colouring same effect. But no opalex. Which was to bad.

I'm having a hard time finding a true grey toner. Everything I have used has more of a blue based grey. What are some of your favourite grey toners?

Cassandra
19/1/2016 11:53:32 am

You need to aim for a silver or add clear and process longer.
Results will be perfection.

My mother is a master colorist and stylist. Has been for 30+ years. That price is ridiculous.

Cassandra

AJ.
Where is your mother located?
This price is exactly what it would cost in Australian Dollars in Sydney.

I am a master stylist and colorist in a small town in the USA. I do a ton of these types of color services and her technique listed is spot on and the prices are very close to what I charge here. Not rediculous at all. There are short cuts that can make it less expensive but it kills the hair and the color doesn't last. No color looks good on burnt hair.

So after lightening, you tone out the yellow, rinse and then put your silver or pastel tone on? Could it not be done in one step after pre lightening to pale yellow?

I had this done to my hair about two weeks ago. I was not aware of the process and damage this would do to my hair. It took 2 days and 10 hours each day. She bleached my hair 3 times and I ended up with a terrible chemical burn on my scalp that has still not gone away. I have also experienced hair loss and my hair and scalp are completely burnt. My color lasted less than a week and has faded to a complete white. I am hoping to regrow the hair that is now missing and desperately treating chemical burns on my forehead, ear, neck, and under part of my hair. Know what you are getting into with this lengthy and risky process. I wish I was properly informed and went to a better person to have it done.

Cassandra.
21/1/2016 02:13:37 pm

Yes. It sounds like you absolutely visited the wrong salon as there is no way, 3 applications of bleach should be applied to your scalp.
You poor thing. I'm so sorry you experienced that.
Don't be turned off by a VERY bad experience.

Did your stylist use Ovaplex or NeoBond when lightening your hair?? If not that is part of the problem. There should have been no reason for a chemical burn or for you to have hair loss. The process is lengthy, however 20 hours total is excessive.

I have no idea why any reasonable person would do this. Is it a statement of wealth? I mean it's fine if you must..?? It's obviously a growing business however I find myself scratching my head. No pun intended. But I would also orate that I don't buy my nails, pay for a suntan, purchase a different nose. The list could go on. I don't purchase the things the good Lord bestows me freely. The color is right, the sun brilliant and my nose??? Well he created me. In His world, the one in which I live there are no mistakes. I am getting old I guess. Good luck and God Bless ladies. Thanks for listening.

LOL, I'm doing it for free! After coloring the greys since I was 35, I'm letting it grow out. Should have it done by the time this trend runs its course. Oh, well!

Ha. My hair was black last time I dyed it and I am now an intense silver as desired results are. It cost me $60 to do it myself. Bleached my hair to a yellow/white from black (2 processes) and then put a light grey dye over top, Berina a21. I had to buy this dye online because I couldn't find it anyway locally in Australia. But the colour turned out perfect. I've now put Lolane Pixxel p39 on top of the light grey and it's an intense grey/silver. Absolutely beautiful colour and less damage than thought. Went to my local salon and they couldn't believe how easy the colour was to achieve with the right products. The colour hasn't faded and it's been 2 weeks.

What volume of bleach did you use for the 1st 2 processing. I also have not heard of. the two tone brands but I'm ok to find on line. I have a lady who has put a box color on her hair level 5 and wants it light silver. I'm nervous but I want to try if only she goes out of the salon pretty and good health hair because it will represent me.

Could you please be so kind to send information to my email

Thanks I remember my hairdresser mentioning using opalex when she was doing my hair , and this article better explains to me how she was transitioning to silver. I have only had the 1st application done and I know I need to go back to get it closer to silver at least a couple of times more but when is the earliest I should be able to go back to get it closer to silver ?
Thanks

I like how you mentioned that it's the time that it takes and not the length of your hair. My sister mentioned to me last night that she is planning to have her hair colored and asked if I have any idea what is the best option to do. Thanks to this informative article and I'll be sure to tell her that she can try consulting a hair colour correction service as they can answer all her inquiries and will surely provide good-quality service for her hair.
